The RSPCA has condemned an alleged spear gun attack on a dog at Woy Woy.

A 45-year-old man has been refused bail to front Gosford Local Court over the incident today.

He's accused of breaking into a Cogra Road home yesterday and punching, then shooting the dog after an ongoing dispute with a neighbour over its barking.

RSPCA NSW Chief Inspector David O'Shannesy says the Labradoodle's undergone surgery overnight.

He saw pictures of its injuries.

"It's definitely distressing," he said.

The dog is receiving specialist vet care today.

The RSPCA says if we have an issue with dogs barking nearby, we should use the appropriate channels to deal with it.

"Talk to your neighbours if there are concerns and try to work through those challenges.," Mr O'Shannesy said.

"If they can't be resolved in that manner, obviously the people with the issue should be contacting the authorities [council] to deal with it appropriately."
