Inland parts of the Hunter have enjoyed a much-needed soaking.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Maitland's Belmore Bridge received 54mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am this morning.

That makes it Maitland's wettest day since March last year.

Seaham received 40mm while some Newcastle suburbs also enjoyed a soaking, with New Lambton Heights recording 50 mm of rainfall.

However the heavy rain also caused issues on the Hunter's roads.

Maitland Highway Patrol responded to at least 20 crashes before 9am.

A car lost control and slammed into a pole on Pender Road, Louth Park at around 6am, trapping the driver.
