He’s well known for his aggressive tooth-brushing technique, but Married At First Sight’s Troy Delmege is now gunning for a career in politics.

The reality TV star announced he’ll be contesting the seat of North Sydney as an independent on Instagram last night.

"I'm sick of the same old politics and it's time for the next generation to step up,” he said in the video. "I'm going to be someone who brings the community together."

He said it was his passion for the area that motivated him to make the step into politics:

“I’m really tired of what I see as the destruction of a lot of out suburbs across the North Shore. Development is so out of control, I feel compelled to do something about it. I keep seeing our village centres being destroyed.”

“I’m a little bit uninspired and sick and tired of the same old major parties and I just don’t see anyone doing anything about this stuff.”

But while you might think he’d be looking to use his popularity from the reality TV show, he’s not banking on it:

“I hope to capture everyone’s attention and chase every ones vote. Obvious I was on a reality TV show which probably does have more currently with young people. I think I will have to work off that connotation. I don’t think I came across in the best light on that show.”

He said he’d like to draw on his MAFS profile as minimally as possible.
