Due to the higher than average flu season last year, Campaspe Shire Council will be offering vaccinations from late April.

Mayor, Cr Adrian Weston said this year, the focus will be in May and June, to deliver the majority of vaccinations. This means the injection will provide protection well into winter, as it's most effective in the fist three to four months following.

“Residents could receive their vaccination through council’s regular immunisation program that operates across the shire, while businesses could organise an in-house group vaccination of their staff through the business program,” Cr Weston said.

“Two free new vaccines, that provide better coverage, will be on offer for residents over 65 as they were badly affected last year. Additionally, the Victorian Government is providing free flu vaccines for children aged six months up to five years.

“Influenza is far worse than a bad cold; it’s a viral infection that can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications, including pneumonia.

“With over 3,000 flu-related deaths each year, vaccinating is the most effective way to protect you and those around you. Contrary to what some believe, the vaccine cannot give you a dose of the flu because it does not contain any live virus.”
