Students at an elite Melbourne school have taken to the field to protest the sacking of their deputy principal.

Rohan Brown was fired from his role at Trinity Grammar after video emerged showing him giving a student a haircut.

But while the school had said his behaviour was "inconsistent with community expectations,” the students want him back.

School leaders have urged students to wear casual clothes and brown tape around their wrists today to show their support for Mr Brown.

"We are utterly hurt, angry and disappointed with the sacking of Mr Brown," the student group said in a statement.

"To show how inseparable Brownie is from our community, every boy from Year 7-12 has been encouraged to wear brown tape of their wrist."
