It can be pretty hard to stay chill when there's a nationwide heatwave and every particle of your being is telling you to turn the aircon to 2C and leave it blasting 24/7.

However, to avoid a meltdown when your next energy bill arrives, we've collated some tips to keep your house cool and your bank account happy.

Air-conditioning

One tip that's sure to make a big difference to your bills is to keep the temperature between 23C and 26C.

For each degree of cooling below this, it works out to add up to 10 per cent to running costs.

Natural breezes

If you're opening a window, be sure to have windows and doors on the opposite side of the room or your house open.

This creates a cross-ventilation effect, and will help the air move.

Shade

If you have adjustable awnings outside your windows, be sure to angle them to maximise the amount of shade hitting the windows.

This will help keep the heat off your home.

Fans are your friend!

According to Ausgrid, it costs roughly 2 cents per hour to run a ceiling fan.

In stark contrast, having the aircon on for an hour works out to be about 30-40 cents - which can easily add hundreds to your bill at the end of summer.

Another tip is to turn off unnecessary lights in the house, which can save up to $40, and switching off the TV and other appliances at the wall can save up to $80.
