The Gold Coast is bracing for possible severe storms this afternoon, with wild weather brewing out west.

Despite a sunny morning, most of South East Queensland was in the firing line for showers and gusty storms on Wednesday afternoon.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Ken Kato said some areas could cop up to 40mm of rain, with the potential for flash flooding.

"It's probably worthwhile keeping an eye on the warnings and the radar just in case any of that significant activity comes nearby," he said.

RACQ Insurance had more than 70 claims after those hail storms in the northern suburbs a couple of weeks ago, and spokesperson Kirsty Clinton said residents could do more to prepare themselves and their property.

"Unfortunately our data shows only about a quarter of people taken any action to prepare their property when a hail storm is coming," she said.

"Make sure you move your car under cover if you can, under a garage or a carport, and if you have any outdoor items which could be breakable like glass-top furniture, move that undercover as well".
