Gold Coast And Brisbane Named Car Theft Capitals Of Australia

The Gold Coast is the second worst region in Australia when it comes to car thefts.

More than 1,500 vehicles were stolen across the city last financial year, coming in just behind Brisbane which recorded more than 2,000 thefts, taking out the unwanted title of Car Theft Capital of Australia.

Despite the number of incidents falling by six percent nationally, Queensland bucked the trend with a 15 percent increase, according to new National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council data from the 2017/18 financial year.

RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton said it was disappointing to see the state take out three of the five top spots for car theft in the country.

"It’s extremely disappointing to continually see our State top these lists and we need to take action now,” she said.

Brisbane, Queensland – 2,115 thefts
Gold Coast, Queensland – 1,551 thefts
Greater ACT – 1,102 thefts
Logan, Queensland – 1,014 thefts
Hume, VIC – 934 thefts
