The controversial new Instrument Landing System is going online at Gold Coast Airport today.

The ILS will direct incoming planes over homes from Surfers Paradise to Currumbin in certain cases, a plan which prompted a string of objections from residents concerned about noise.

However it is expected to greatly reduce the number of flights being delayed or diverted to other airports during bad weather.

It concludes more than a decade of preparation and installation work on the project.
