There will be spoilers here.

In the first two episodes of Game Of Thrones season eight, we’ve established that most of our major characters are hanging out in Winterfell or King’s Landing.

However there is one big character we haven’t even heard mentioned – Melisandre.

The Red Woman has played a pretty major role in past seasons, but was exiled from the North by Jon Snow at the end of season 6. She then made her way to Dragonstone at the start of season 7 to meet with Daenerys. When Jon showed up, she decided to depart for Volantis.

Now there are a few clues that indicate that we will see Melisandre again. First of all, in her final conversation with Varys at Dragonstone she told him that her fate was to die in Westeros. This means that she knows she will be returning at some point.

Secondly, her entire motivation is to find the Prince That Was Promised. While speaking with Daenerys about this, translator Missandei revealed that the prophecy was mistranslated, and that it could refer to a prince or princess. While Melisandre believes that Jon is the Prince, the prophecy could also refer to Daenerys. Another Red Priestess, Kinvara, mentioned Daenerys in relation to this prophecy in season 6. No matter who it refers to, it seems unlikely the Melisandre would miss out on seeing the prophecy fulfilled during the war.

Thirdly, back in season 3 Melisandre encountered Arya in the woods with the Brotherhood Without Banners. Melisandre told Arya that the two of them “will meet again”. Melisandre is still on Arya’s kill list for taking Gendry away. It would be very strange for these two not to face off again before Game Of Thrones finishes up.

So that’s three reasons why Melisandre will appear again, but what if she’s already at Winterfell?

That’s the theory currently floating around Reddit, where fans believe that the Red Woman is already lurking around Winterfell’s dark corners.

They believe that the little girl with facial scars who we saw in the soup line is actually Melisandre in disguise. The girl has some resemblance to Shireen, the daughter of Stannis Baratheon who Melisandre had burnt at the stake. Davos, who loved Shireen, has a moment of shock when he sees the girl.

Here’s an explanation of the theory:

“It is too coincidental that a burnt child with facial scars is presented all alone to Davos.

“He would otherwise not let Melisandre anywhere near the battle which she has promised to return to.

“And it sets a deeper fire and passion in him to protect the living.

“In addition to this being a fairly obvious reason to have the child introduced, even her hood and part in her hair too closely resemble her recurring style in the last glamour.”

We’ve seen before that Melisandre is actually an old woman who uses some kind of magic to present herself in a more youthful form. So maybe she’s decided to make herself even younger to stay hidden.

We can't wait to find out more.
