Victorian police are investigating the horrific death of a beloved family dog in Dandenong overnight.

Vuk, an 11-year-old Maltese cross Jack Russell was found seriously injured by his owners in his Fifth Avenue backyard this morning. He had suffered multiple stab wounds.

The owners placed the dog in the car but found the family car tyre was slashed and were unable to transport the dog to the vet immediately.

Vuk was later taken to the vet where he was put down due to the severity of his injuries.

NOTE: Police have clarified the dog's name was "Vuk", earlier reports suggested the dog's name was "Buk".
