An elderly taxi driver has been threatened with a replica firearm, dragged from his car, punched and robbed by two men in Sydney's CBD, police say.

The young men got into the 75-year-old driver's taxi in Woolloomooloo about 6am on Thursday and asked him to stop on Harmer Street before committing the offences, then fleeing with his cash and bag.

The pair - who left behind a replica firearm bound with blue tape - are described as being in their late teens or early 20s, 172 and 180 centimetres tall, and in black hooded jumpers.

The shorter man had blue or green paint on his face.
