A 24-year-old man from Esperance has been charged for Criminal Damage and Disorderly Behaviour, following what Police described as ‘disgraceful behaviour’ towards hospital staff.

After visiting the Seafront Caravan Park on Goldfields Road just before midnight on Friday 16th March, Jake Bennett threw a pot plant through a large window of the business. The manager of another nearby business approached and apprehended the man, and held him until police arrived. Bennett was arrested and taken to hospital for the treatment of injuries sustained earlier in the evening, believed to have been the result of an altercation.

Whilst at the hospital, Bennett shouted and yelled profanities and homophobic remarks at hospital staff and police in the Emergency Department. Despite police's attempts to to curb the language, Bennett continued the behaviour for over three hours. Bennett appeared in court on Saturday, March 17 and stated he could not remember what had happened but pleaded guilty to the charges. The court ordered Bennett to pay restitution of $2000 to the Shire of Esperance for the smashed window, pay a fine of $1000 and write letters of apology to hospital staff and police prior to being released from custody.
