The Great Gamble or the Great Escape, that's the question as England abolishes COVID restrictions with millions enjoying their first full day of freedom.

Revellers celebrated across the country, hitting the dance floors and and nightclubs, throwing masks to the wind as the clock struck midnight, with masks and social distancing no longer mandatory.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stressed vigilance as case numbers continue to soar with the UK recording 40,000 Covid cases a day.

In a massive U-turn hours after clubs re-opened, Mr Johnson announced compulsory vaccine passports will be required form late September to enter venues with larger capacities.

"We want this country to enjoy the fruits of our massive efforts of our enormous vaccination campaign"

- PM Boris Johnson

In wide-sweeping opposition to the plans, Liberal Democratic spokesperson on Home Affairs Alistair Carmichael said that “vaccine passports are Covid ID cards: unworkable, expensive and divisive.”

Meanwhile, health authorities are concerned hospitalisations could rise "quite a lo" high than 1000 per day over the summer.
