Brisbane homicide detectives will apply to re-try a man over a cold case murder from the 1980s.

It's the first time chapter 68 of the criminal code - to retry an acquitted person of murder - has been applied for by prosecutors in Queensland.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged by investigators with the 1987 Brisbane murder on Friday, police said in a statement.

The man's arrest will now trigger a legal mechanism for exceptions to double jeopardy whereby the court will rule if the previously acquitted man can be retried for the murder.
