Unless you live in the North or West of Melbourne, getting to an airport is usually a big pain!

Residents in the Eastern and South Eastern suburbs, and further east have a long way to go to get to Tullamarine and even further if they dare fly from Avalon... but a solution could finally be on the horizon.

The Victorian Government is set to stake a claim on land near Koo Wee Rup to build a new major airport.

The idea won't come cheap, with a $5-billion tag on the cost of the land... and that's where Spring Street's responsibility ends.

Major airports are the responsibility of Canberra. The Federal Government has to give the green light for planes to land there, and private businesses will be left to fund building an airport.

If it eventually happens, it'll be great for tourism in the region and make it a whole lot easier for interstate and international visitors to get to Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula. Lets just hope they build a train line there as well!
