Animal guts have spilled out onto the West Gate Freeway on the approach to the Burnley Tunnel and will take about two hours to clean up.

The awful offal spill has closed two right lanes inbound in Port Melbourne, causing delays back to the West Gate Bridge and the Bolte Bridge.

A CityLink spokesman said the source of the spill was a mystery at this stage as there had not been a crash.

Offal is the entrails and organs of a butchered animal and can include the brain, heart and liver.

"We don't have any information yet on how how it happened," he said. "Our primary concern is cleaning it up.

"Hopefully it will be cleaned up in time for the afternoon peak."

He said the volume of animal fat that had spilled out over the two lanes was a hazard.
