Police have conducted a massive operation targeting the Finks and Nomads outlaw motorbike gangs in the Hunter.

More than 280 officers conducted dawn raids at 31 properties across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley.

Gun parts, ammunition, a lock-picking device and a range of weapons including knuckle dusters, a crossbow and arrows, an extendable baton and explosive detonators were allegedly recovered.

It's also claimed drugs including ecstasy, cannabis and other powders were found during the operation.

Officers also seized a python from the Hunterview area near Singleton.

While a range of Finks and Nomads paraphernalia as well as laptops, hard drives and tablets were seized.

Police have charged 13 men - aged 19 to 55 - with a range of offences.

All have been handed conditional bail ahead of facing Newcastle Local Court later this month.

Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey has pleaded directly with gang members to put an end to rising tensions between both groups, following a number of drive-by shootings across the region this year.

"If anyone has information from within these gangs - I know this is going to be a hard road to come to the police and provide information."

"But eventually either you or someone in your family could be shot with these public place shootings - or even someone who's totally unrelated to the gang."

"That will be on your conscience."
