You might think that playing competitive games with your partner might increase the chances of you splitting (we all know how Monopoly makes us act…), but it turns out that it may actually HELP you stay together.
A new study has found that couples who play Mario Kart together are more likely to stay together!
A survey conducted by Century link found that such games, but especially Mario Kart, have a positive impact on our love lives.
They surveyed over 1,000 people in order to analyse the impacts of game on their relationships. One in three people between 18-24 said that games helped to strengthen their relationships, however older survey participants believed it did not.
This shows a marked difference in generations and things that may cause conflict within partnerships between each. Of the 1,000 participants, only 42 said that games led to a breakup.
James Gaskin, a game developer and professor of business at Brigham Young University, explained, "Romantic partners from the millennial generation grew up with video games as a large part of their lives.
"Therefore, gaming is simply more natural and accepted. Whereas with older generations, a partner who played video games was perceived as juvenile and irresponsible."
Mario Kart ranked first in games with positive effects for relationships, followed by Call of Duty and Skyrim.
While you might use this as an excuse to play games all day long, it’s important to remember it’s the ‘playing it together’ that strengthens your relationship, and that regular breaks from gaming are a necessity.
Who knew that throwing banana peels at your partner could strengthen your relationship?
