A police officer has been bitten by a police dog in Melbourne' south east.

Cops were patrolling in Cleveland Street, Ashwood around midnight Thursday night when they came across three people and went to speak to them.

One of the blokes fled the scene, leading to the dog squad being called in - unfortunately one police officer copped a bite from one of the dogs.

He was taken to hospital for observation, and has since been released, however the man who fled is still on the run.
