Hunter health officials say a man suffering meningococcal disease is in a serious condition in a local hospital.

This is the second confirmed case of the potentially deadly disease in the Hunter this year.

A 70 year old woman was left critically ill last month.

It's prompted a warning from Hunter New England Health to look out for symptoms, which include fever, headache, nausea vomiting and a reddish-purple rash.

Meningococcal disease is mostly common in Winter and early-Spring.
