Sydney commuters have been warned that there may be train delays this week, as a consequence of the blistering heat.

The unrelenting heatwave that's happening across Australia has seen temperatures soar to the mid-to-high 30s, with little reprieve overnight.

Such is the heat, the steel train tracks are likely to buckle, with Transport Minister Andrew Constance assuring commuters that additional maintenance workers and medical staff will be on hand during the week.

“Please be careful of the dangers associated with the heatwave we’re experiencing, particularly in Western Sydney," Mr Constance said.

One commuter posted on Twitter today a thank you message to the staff at Sydney's Central station, who were handing out free water bottles to passengers.
