A desperate search is set to commence this morning, for a whale in distress off the coast of Newcastle.
We're being urged to keep an eye out for it here on the Central Coast, with ORRCA officials saying it may have travelled from where it was spotted.
The 12m humpback was last seen entangled in ropes and dragging a buoy yesterday afternoon around 400m north of Stockton Beach.
High winds and large swell hampered the rescue efforts.
Shona Lorigan from ORRCA is calling for anyone who may spot the whale to get in contact by calling 9415 3333.
"It could in fact go north or south of Newcastle, so we really need people...up as far as Port Macquarie and down south on the Central Coast to keep an eye out..."
