Chris Dawson has been refused bail in Southport Magistrates Court after being arrested in relation to the disappearance of his wife Lynette Dawson in 1982.

The 70-year-old former rugby league player and teacher applied for bail, but was deemed an unacceptable risk of failing to appear, and was refused to be extradited to NSW.

He was expected to be charged with murdering the 33-year-old mother of two, and was due to front Parramatta Local Court on Thursday, December 6.

Mr Dawson was taken into custody at a Biggera Waters home just before 8am on Wednesday.

He stayed mostly calm and composed in the dock while the matter was heard, occasionally putting his head in his hands and shaking his head.
