A 29-year-old man's been slapped in handcuffs overnight, after allegedly attacking another man at Surfers Paradise.

Police allege the two men, who knew each other, got into a heated argument outside a fast-food business on Surfers Paradise Boulevard around 11:30 on Wednesday night.

They claimed the older of the two, a 39-year-old, was punched repeatedly, dragged to the ground and had property taken from his backpack, before the offender took off.

The victim suffered a large gash above his eye during the attack.

An Ormeau man was arrested on Ferny Avenue a short time later.

He was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, possess utensil and possess property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

He is due in the Southport Magistrates Court on March 16.
