Ambulance Victoria’s Chief has described the overnight assault of two paramedics as “brutal and sickening”.

Two paramedics were called to a Coburg address at around 10.40pm last night when they were attacked.

The pair were treating a drug affected man in the ambulance when he became physically aggressive.

“On arrival the patient was initially composed and sat in the ambulance and allowed paramedics to take his blood pressure,” Ambulance Victoria Chief Executive Officer Associate Professor Tony Walker said.

“As the crew prepared to take the man to hospital he became physically aggressive and attacked our female paramedic, who was pushed in her chest, put in a headlock and punched in the face. Our male paramedic saw the attack and come to her aid, and he was assaulted.”

A bystander helped the pair before police arrived. The man was sedated and taken to hospital.

“What happened last night is unfortunately not new to us, and forces us to reiterate that aggression and abuse towards paramedics is completely unacceptable.

“It’s never OK to attack or assault emergency service workers,” Associate Professor Walker said.
