Big W is an Aussie go-to for just about anything you need for the best price, well, at least it used to be.

The discount department store favourite has just announced the first batch of stores to close in January next year and all three are in Sydney.

Residents will have to say goodbye to the beloved Big W stores in Chullora, Auburn and Fairfield.

Big W managing director, David Walker explained to News.com.au that these are not decisions that they make lightly and that they are committed to supporting the employees who have lost their jobs.

The store closures come as part of a major cost-saving strategy which was announced in April this year.

The company says it will continue to work with landlords in the coming months before deciding which of the other 27 stores will be next to close.

Earlier this year, Woolworths chief executive, Brad Banducci said there was “no alternative” but to close 30 Big W stores across Australia in an attempt to keep the business afloat.

Woolworths is yet to announce which of the remaining stores will be closed and, despite all of the first three closures being in Sydney, retail experts predict that the next batch will be a combination of regional and metropolitan stores.
