For us Sydneysiders, we are pretty much spoilt for choice when it comes to watching the New Years Eve fireworks but this one takes the cake.

A ballot is now open for people to book a rare opportunity to have a five-night sleepover in the heart of Sydney's harbour at the world-heritage listed site, Cockatoo Island.

From today until 11.59pm on the 25th August applicants have the opportunity to nab the rare experience.

There is a choice between either a historic apartment or house on the island where each building has its own unique outdoor viewing area. There are also options to accommodate between two and 12 people.

On New Year’s Eve, there will be live music, tours of the island, food outlets, bars and other activities on the island. And of course, that killer fireworks view.

But be warned the prices are not for the faint-hearted.

If these prices seem a little out of reach there is also a camping package which will be on sale from September 2 at 9am. And don't get us wrong, it's more like glamping than camping!
