The Councillor of Mitcham, Karen Hockley, joined Bec and Cosi on air this morning to discuss the recent decision to cancel the super popular annual carols event.
According to Karen, the motion to cut $45K worth of funding for the event was passed was put forward at the last minute by a councillor, with no notice to others.
The funding could potentially intend be given to churches to host their own events, with Mitcham at this stage not likely to host the carols as it is not an “A-religious” event.
“You’ve got some people in the council saying it’s not inclusive of all religions and therefore the event of 5000 people singing Christmas carols should be cancelled, that’s their stance,” Cosi said.
“This event is all about communities coming together, you’re decision with other councillors as well, has divided the community that you’re meant to be there to support.”
