Authorities Investigate Virgin Australia Flight After Engines Cut Out

Officials are investigating a Virgin Australia flight bound from Sydney to Canberra after its engines cut out at 11-thousand feet.

The incident occurred last Thursday on board a VA660 flight, and is being treated as "serious" by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Peter Gibson from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority told the Hit Newsroom it's rare for a plane to "flame out".

"It's a very unusual occurrence where the engine literally goes out," he explained.

"The flames in the turbines are extinguished, the system automatically restarts it, that's what happened in this case, and the plane went on and landed normally."

A Virgin Australia spokesperson confirmed the investigation was underway.

"The aircraft, travelling from Sydney to Canberra, landed safely and there was no customer impact," they told the Hit Newsroom.

"Safety is always our number one priority and we are assisting the ATSB with their investigation."
