Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony

Hosted by: Mackay Regional Council

What's happening: Mayor Greg Williamson will welcome a large group of new citizens.

A Family Day at the Beach

Hosted by: Eimeo Surf Life Saving Club
When: 9am – 2pm Saturday, January 26
Where: Eimeo Surf Lifesaving Club, Eimeo Beach, Eimeo Esplanade
What’s happening: This ‘ripper’ event will include more fun than you can poke a stick at with thong throwing competitions, egg and spoon races, beach cricket, Aussie Iron person race (500m run and 200m swim and eat a cold pie and drink a milo), Aussie beach flag races and vegemite face painting competition. Note - this is a free event but some food and drinks will also be available for sale.

Australia Day @ Sarina Beach

When: 2pm - 6pm Saturday, January 26
Where: Sarina Beach, Sarina Esplanade
What’s happening: In its 6th year, this event will be bigger than ever with DJ, BBQ, water slide and heaps of fun competitions like pie eating, thong throwing, fastest man on the sand and wheelbarrow races. Cash prizes are up for grabs! BYO picnic blanket and chair. Note - this event is free to attend but some activities and food may require a gold coin donation.

Aussie Family BBQ in the Park

Hosted by: Mackay & District Australian South Sea Islander Association Inc
When: 11am – 3pm Saturday, January 26
Where: Quota Park - Southern end of Binnington Esplanade, Mackay
What’s happening: Come along and celebrate our diversity and culture at a community BBQ by the beach. Activities on the day will include a free BBQ and plenty of beach game activities for the kids and family. A special bus service is available for the elderly.

Aussie Day at Harbour Beach

What’s happening: Dive into Australia Day and bring the kids to this Aussie themed event with jumping/water castle, beach volley ball, live music, tug-of-war, thong throwing competition and more!

Australia Day Scouts Open Day

Where: Banksia Scout Den, Jaycee Park, Cnr of Fernleigh Av and Bedford Rd, Andergrove
What’s happening: Parents bring a chair and enjoy the shade of the trees while the kids have some fun this Australia Day. Activities will include rope bridge, low ropes course, 'land based' canoe races, damper cooking and much more! Sausage sizzle and drinks available for gold coin donation.

Fishing and Games at the Beach

What’s happening: Get your vitamin 'sea' at this great event with family fishing competition, kite making/decorating/flying, beach games and aussie BBQ. There will also be a memory tree to remember those who have taken their life by suicide.

Habana ‘Beach’ Party

Where: Habana Community Precinct, 1091 Mackay-Habana Rd
What’s happening: Activities include sand castle competition, Byrnes pies with mushy peas (for sale), backyard cricket, inflatable water play area and slip 'n' slide, lamington eating and thong throwing competitions, Habana community award presentation, display by the Habana sew’n’sew and a Tai Chi demonstration by Habana School of Tai Chi.

Pancakes and Play in the Park

What’s happening: Shed Happens G'day Mate is a local men's group and in partnership with NHW, they are supported by Mackay Cutters and Change The Game initiative. They are proudly sponsored by Absolute Enterprises. It will be a fantastic day with heaps of games and group sharing opportunities, and of course free pancakes! The games will be family oriented and involve team building exercises including golf ball relay, knots and blanket toss. A special guest Jayden Hodges from Mackay Cutters will make an appearance.
