A man who allegedly murdered a woman in Melbourne's Chinatown district sat with his face in his hands as a magistrate ordered he return to court in August.

Family and friends of 32-year-old Geelong woman Natalia Angok on Friday piled into court to watch the brief hearing for her partner and accused killer Christopher Allen Bell, 32.

Bell said nothing during the hearing, the second in two days, as magistrate Duncan Reynolds ordered he remain in custody to face a committal mention in August 30.
