A young man's guide to being single on the Gold Coast

Go on, get it.

We can all admit the difficulties of being single on the Gold Coast.

It's the stomping ground for schoolies, holidays makers and close-knit groups.

Gentlemen, we're here to give you a helping hand.

Sea FM was lucky enough to sit down with Malcolm Chenu, author of 'A Young Man's Guide to Getting Some'.

We asked him to provide us with the best advice on how a man can win the girl of his dreams with respect and class in the age of sexting, swiping, tindering and Bumbl-ing.

Grab a pen and paper, you're going to need it...

1. How do you initiate contact?

Have the guts to have a go. Don’t be shy – wallflowers don’t get their stamens pollinated. Avoid sleazy opening lines and NO negging!

2.  Escaping the "friend zone"

Have the stones to tell her how you feel. What have you got to lose - another few years in the ‘Zone’? Ask her out on a date and make sure she knows it’s a date. Don’t give up – it may take a few attempts. And don’t be a dick about rejection or postponement. If you are cool she may recommend you to a friend of hers you might like. Dickheads don’t get referrals.

3. Respecting the effort she makes to look good

Girls put in a humungous effort to look good for a date. They shave and pluck and wax and laser and paint and cut and primp and blow dry and do stuff that makes the boys from Jackass look like wusses. To put it in perspective, you probably had a quick shower and maybe found clean undies, if she’s special. Tell her you are thrilled to have her on your arm. Say ‘Wow’ a lot. And make an effort yourself – at least iron your bloody shirt.

4. How to behave at a dinner date VS on Tinder

On a dinner date:

Ask her if she has a cuisine preference and hope it’s not something weird you’ve never heard of, like Somali or Vegetarian. Italian is a safe choice. Everyone loves Italian food and the language and accent are very sexy. Italy has a culture of flirting too, which should help, as long as she doesn’t fall for the super-cool dude with the designer stubble who brings her delicious food and says “ciao bella” with an accent that could melt mozzarella.

Don’t tell her to eat all her steak and vegies to keep her strength up for later.

On Tinder:

Swipe for a reason. Get out of the virtual world and into the real one asap.

Don’t line up a series of back-to-back dates, especially at the same venue.

Don’t swipe during an actual date.

5. What to do before, during and after actually getting some

Know that whereas you can be ready faster than you can say “You awake, babe?”, girls generally take a bit longer to get into the mood.

Whatever you are doing, you are probably doing it too fast.

This is not a time to update your Facebook status. Afterglow is not a dim light by which you get dressed and sneak out.
