Arson charge, Cairns: A man has been charged in relation to a fire which caused significant damage at a Bentley Park unit complex last month.

Officers from the Greater Cairns Task Force were patrolling the area at around 6pm on February 28 when they noticed smoke coming from a unit at a Golden Grove Drive unit complex.

The officers commenced evacuating the complex, while fire officers extinguished the blaze, that was confined to one unit. Significant damage was done to the ceiling and walls of a bedroom, which is believed to have been where the fire started.

Detectives yesterday spoke with a 20-year-old Cairns man who is alleged to have been a former resident at the complex.

He was subsequently charged with one count of arson and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later this morning.
