A man has been shot dead in southeast Melbourne in the fifth fatal shooting in the city in less than a fortnight.

Emergency services were called to Springvale Road in Springvale, just before midnight on Sunday following reports of a single gunshot.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene and Victoria Police are searching for the shooter.

His death follows a spate of recent shootings in Melbourne and he's the fifth person to die as a result of gun-related violence in four incidents over 10 days.

The previous shootings were in Kensington, Dandenong and Meadow Heights.

Forensic police remain at the scene.
