The National Cyber Security Centre in the UK has revealed some of the most-hacked passwords still in use and putting people at risk, despite the constant pop-up warnings we get to create a strong password that’s atleast 6-letters and uses numbers and other symbols. 

They broke down the top five most-hacked passwords and we’re guessing that some of you, or your older family members, might still be using these…

Top 5 most-hacked passwords:

  1. 123456 
  2. 123456789
  3. qwerty
  4. password
  5. 1111111

Top ‘names’ used as passwords:

  • Ashley 
  • Michael
  • Daniel
  • Jessica 
  • Charlie

The centre also explained that over a quarter of the population doesn’t use a separate password for their central email account, instead re-using passwords across the board.

Worried that you might get hacked?

The technical director of the NCSC, Dr. Ian Levy, revealed in a statement: 

“Password re-use is a major risk that can be avoided - nobody should protect sensitive data with something that can be guessed, like their first name, local football team or favourite band.

"Using hard-to-guess passwords is a strong first step and we recommend combining three random but memorable words. Be creative and use words memorable to you, so people can't guess your password."
