A 26-year-old Manoora man has been charged following investigations into a robbery offence that occurred early on Saturday morning.

It will be alleged that at around 12.20am on Saturday, a 70-year-old man was wheeling his bicycle along Lake Street in the Cairns CBD when he was approached from behind by a male who grabbed the seat and handlebars of the bicycle before pushing the older man to the ground.

The victim stood up and the male then threw several punches at him, none of which struck the victim. The male then rode off on the man’s bike and out of sight shortly afterward. The victim sustained grazed knees as a result of the incident.

Police spoke with the victim a short time later in Florence Street and he provided details of the incident. Officers attended a nearby tavern where a man was located and taken into custody. The stolen bicycle was also located and returned to the owner.

The 26-year-old was charged with one count of robbery and has been remanded to reappear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 31.
