A 10-year-old girl has suffered serious injuries after being mauled by the family dog at Berwick.
It's believed the girl and her sister, 7, may have been home alone with the dog which is believed to be a Russian bullmastiff when it attacked just after 8pm.
Several neighbours rushed to the home when they heard her screams, banging on the windows to distract the dog.
"When I opened the door the young girl was banging on the door screaming," one man told Nine. "After that the other fella went to the other door so we could distract the dog.
"He took it to one door and we got the young girl out the other door."
She was rushed to the Royal Children's Hospital where she's improved slightly from critical to serious with arm, leg, neck, facial and groin injuries.
The dog has been seized by council.
