The Movement To Have One Word Eliminated From Australian Vocabularies

There are certain words and slurs we all know are downright offensive and (assuming you’re a decent person) choose to stay away from.

But there is one word that is still used by a surprising large number of people, often without the intention of any malice.

The ‘R’ word.

Yes, a movement is currently underway to get people to stop calling someone a ‘retard’ or describing something as ‘retarded’.

Polly Hammerton is a triplet who is spearheading the movement after growing up with a brother who suffers from Down Syndrome, Bi Polar Disorder, Autism and has now been diagnosis of an aggressive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

Speaking with Amos, Cat & Angus this morning, Polly explained how the word is still used, it’s impact on society and why we need to eliminate it from our vocabularies.
