Macaulay Culkin Opens Up About His Private Life In Brand New Interview

There's a lot to him!

Macaulay Culkin Opens Up About His Private Life In Brand New Interview Twentieth Century Fox

It's very rare that we get a glimpse into the life of Macaulay Culkin and today, thanks to a wonderful comedian, actor and podcast host Marc Maron, we have learned SO MUCH about what our favourite rapscallion kid is up to now that he's retired from the movie business.

Macaulay is probably one of the most recognisable child actors of the 20th century with Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, Richie Rich and Uncle Buck under his belt, but ever since he quit the film business, the man has been an enigma that we still struggle to understand.

Yes, at one point he did have a beard, long hair and a band called The Pizza Underground, but there is still so much we don't know about Mac (he prefers to be called Mac, not Macauley) and luckily the interview he did on Monday's episode of WTF with Marc Maron, shed some light on the somewhat reclusive man.

You're probably wondering why we don't see very many photos of Mac walking the streets like we do with almost every other celebrity in the world.

Well, this is most likely because he now lives in Paris, France, where no one seems to care about who he is!

"I was going there for a little while and it was one of those things where I thought nobody recognised me, but what it was, was 'No we recognise you, we just don't care!' and I was like, 'where have you people been my whole life?!"

His friends convinced him to move there and he says his French is "terrible".

Mac considers himself "a 30-something retired person" and spends his days painting in his home art studio and writing.

"I write, I paint... A little more abstract-y kind of stuff but I've also been playing with still life, or some kind of figurative stuff and charcoals."

He is currently a part of the 3MB Art Collective and has shown his work in galleries across New York and Paris.

If you've ever dreamt of moving to Paris to be an artist or a writer like Hemingway, well, be jealous because Mac is doing it!

The star has always been into creative things though, from the age of seven he was a professional ballet dancer and did a lot of off-Broadway theatre at only seven-years-old, before becoming Kevin McAllister.

"I was a professional ballet dancer for a couple of years.

"I remember showing up to my class, the audition was a breeze, and then I show up and I go 'no wonder it was a breeze, I'm the third boy and there's like, 40 girls in there'.

"I would do things like Uncle Buck, or whatever, and then race back to New York to do ballet stuff."

Soon after realising that he was a good dancer and theatre actor, Mac's father started taking him to film auditions and he landed almost every role he tried out for!

Home Alone was actually written specifically for him, believe it or not!

Now, everyone knows that Mac was extremely close with the late Michael Jackson, but what you probably didn't know is that they had met long before the actor became a child star.

"We actually met when I was doing the Nutcracker at Lincoln Centre.

"He came backstage before the show... he actually came backstage with Donald Trump, 'cause they were friendly back then, and he looked at me and said, 'I know you from somewhere.'

"I said, 'I also do movies' and that kind of thing and then I think he finally found it and he was like, 'oh, Uncle Buck'."

The actor explained that Michael got in contact with him a few years later and built a relationship with him and his family because as he says, "there's no child actor self-help group" and the singer knew that from being famous at a young age as well.

"After Home Alone came out, he reached out to me and my family.

"Sometimes you reach out to certain [famous] kids if you want to make sure they're alright.

"Just like, 'I know things are weird...'"

Mac and Michael became close friends and the actor became the Godfather of the singer's three children, who he is still close with.

He said nothing was ever "weird" between them and that they bonded because of Michael's youthful nature, but as he got older, he began to realise that the singer was "lonely".

Marc asked his guest if he had spoken to Michael towards the end of his life and Mac explained that he hadn't because he was always travelling.

"I hadn't spoken to him in a while because he was bouncing all over the place.

"He was in Dubai for a while, [but] he just didn't want to go back home.

"He never went back to Santa Barbara again because everything in his life felt tainted... like with that last trial.

"Everything was tainted, so that's why he was kind of trying to start over a little bit and the only thing that was really important to him was his immediate family - his children."

The two delved further into the family discussion and soon, Mac opened up about his complicated relationship with his father.

Macaulay explained at the beginning of the podcast that he hadn't spoken to his father in "a quarter of a century almost" because they never got along, even when he was very young.

"It was sour from early on, even before the fame stuff.

"We didn't like each other, but imagine all of a sudden this man, who you dislike and who dislikes you, you now become the sole focus of him.

"Now all of a sudden, I'm going around the country, locked in a room with a guy who doesn't like me."

Mac even said that his father may have been jealous of his success as his father was an actor and dancer before he had children, but "never made it past the chorus".

Mac's father was his manager throughout his acting career and their relationship just got worse over time and now, the actor simply says "he was a bad man".

"Honestly, he was just a bad man.

"He was abusive, physically and mentally, I can show you all of my scars if you want me to but yeah, he was a bad dude."

This didn't just happen to him, Mac also said that his father was abusive towards his mother and his six siblings.

"I started catching the brunt of it for a while.

"God bless my family, they would always get these respites whenever I was off doing a gig, you know they'd get three months off from him.

"But better me than someone else, that's what I always say."

Although he went through a lot, Macaulay still thinks he came out the other side and feels happy enough doing whatever he wants to do and this year, he's even decided to return to acting!

Mac is filming a new movie called Changeland that he will star in alongside Seth Green and his girlfriend Brenda Song!

These are only snippets of the interview the actor did with Marc and you can listen to the full thing here and anywhere else you have access to podcasts.
