Magda Szubanski has issued a passionate plea to Australians to make sure they vote for marriage equality in the upcoming Marriage Law Postal Survey.
The actress got emotional on The Project last night while discussing the issue, which is extremely close to her heart.
“More than half a decade (after coming out), I’m still making these arguments,” Magda said.
“It’s not just about matters of equality ... I feel teary again.”
She opened up about a friend who was unable to be in a hospital room with her partner while she received treatment for cancer because they were not married.
“It’s about illness and death. Here I go again but boy. A friend of mine ... her partner, long term partner, had cancer.
“She wanted to be in the room with her when she was having a painful treatment and the doctor said ‘next of kin only — parents, siblings, no spouses’.
“She wasn’t allowed in and she had to stand outside and listen to the screams of the woman she loved, unable to even comfort her. Now, in whose universe is that fair? What God thinks that’s right?”
