We're only at the beginning of 2018 and already, we've been introduced to some very strange food.
Now, Japanese scientists have surprised us all by developing a banana that has an edible peel!
The banana is called a "Mongee" (pronounced mon-gay), which is a slang word for incredible in Japanese.
The fruit was made using an extreme freezing and thawing process and according to D&T Farm's spokesperson Tetsuya Tanaka, the idea originally began as a research "hobby" for development manager Setsuzo Tanaka.
To create the banana, researchers plant and grow banana trees in an environment kept at -60 degrees celsius.
They then thaw the tree and replant them as the change in temperature encourages the plants to grow rapidly, leaving the fruit with a lettuce-like texture.
D&T Farm claims that this new banana has a variety of nutrition benefits as a banana peel can contain vitamin B6, magnesium and tryptophan.
They also say on their website that the banana is a lot sweeter than a regular banana as it contains five more grams of sugar.
What a time to be alive!
