"Free bus service is vital"

The Cancer Patient Transport Service is run by the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation, picking up and dropping patients off when and where they need to be.

Ms Gilmer, who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer three years ago, says it can be hard relying on friends and family for lifts all the time, when they have busy lives to lead.

If you go on the bus, you know you're right; you need something so reliable. They are absolutely amazing and all the people you speak to on the bus sit and go 'I just couldn't do this without the bus service.

A fundraising lunch to keep the service afloat and also raise cash for new chemotherapy chairs is being held at the Palazzo Versace on March 16.

A children's book written by Ms Gilmer will also be on sale at the event.

Proceeds from The Stripy Dachshund will also go to the charity.

I thought it would just be something I'd write and put in the back of the cupboard and leave it there, but it's taken off more than I thought it would!
