The Bunbury community is being encouraged to embrace NAIDOC Week this year through a series of activities planned for the national week, held from 8-15 July.

South West Aboriginal Medical Service CEO Lesley Nelson, said NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. “NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to come together, embrace, respect and celebrate our Indigenous culture as a community,” Ms Nelson said.

SWAMS will once again be hosting an Elders Luncheon on 11 July and a Family Fun Day the following day.

“Culture and community are at the heart of what we do as an Aboriginal Medical Service,” “It brings us great pleasure to deliver these local NAIDOC Week events and I encourage our Noongar community and Australians from all walks of life to embrace and enjoy this special week.”

The SWAMS NAIDOC Family Fun Day will be held at Bunbury Trotting Club between 10 am and 2 pm on Thursday 12 July. Entry is free and a gold coin donation is appreciated. Entertainment for all ages will be on offer, including kids’ activities and rides, a free sausage sizzle, local Noongar performances, cultural tastings, free goodie bags for the first 500 entrants and a Noongaroke singing contest.

The SWAMS Clinic On Wheels will also be offering free health checks throughout the day. For more information on the SWAMS Family Fun Day or Elders Luncheon, contact the SWAMS office on (08) 9791 1166 or email [email protected]
