On Sunday, the designs of the trial program for 10 non-lethal SMART drum lines, to be set in Gracetown's oceans to prevent shark attacks, were released.

The drum lines will be placed along an 11.5km stretch of coastline, about 500 metres offshore, with the aim of determining if the technology is effective in reducing attacks.

The technology uses hooks attached to bouys to bait sharks. When a shark is hooked, an alert is sent to a boat crew, who will tag the shark and tow it out to sea for release.

Three receivers will also be installed to detect nearby tagged sharks, after which a warning will be sent via satellite to the Government's Sharksmart website and the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.

Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly said the receivers will be installed by mid-December, with the trial set to start early 2019.

Let us know what you think of the new initiative!
