Members of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community Garden have welcomed plans of a shake-up of the garden’s layout to generate more space for entertainment.

The work, which began in June, has involved cutting down several trees and the creation of three raised beds.

The first bed, which is 20m long and 1.5m high, has been prepared and is ready to take some of the plants which would otherwise be placed in a space earmarked as an outdoor extension to the sheltered entertainment area.

Another raised bed is being built alongside the fence line which runs adjacent to Hammond Park as well as a hexagonal bed made from railway sleepers.

There are plans in place over the next 12 months to have a wood-fired pizza oven on a base which can be wheeled into the entertainment space and used by garden members as well as putting in a food wheel bed which has been broken up into six sections and will be planted with a variety of vegetables which is a good way of getting kids interested in gardening.

An annual family membership is $40 and individual memberships are $25 which allows entry to the garden 24 hours a day.

Private allotments can also be hired for $60 a year and inquiries can be made through the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community Garden Facebook page.
