If you love your Thai you’ve probably visited the Thai International Restaurant on Flinders Street.
Famous for their great food, but equally as famous for their funny 'front man' who greets diners at the door daily.
His name is Dtor; better known as ‘The Smiling Man’.
The family business announced on Facebook yesterday the heartbreaking news that they’ll be retiring from the restaurant, writing;
‘After 28 wonderful years, we as a family have decided to finally retire from our restaurant. Thank you to all our amazing customers old and new, it has been a pleasure, and you know we don't forget a face!’
The Facebook post was flooded with well wishes and memories.
“Oh no! My boyfriend 20 years ago, now husband took me to your Restaurant and I had my Hens dinner there and when we returned to Australia we introduced our daughter to your restaurant. You taught her to make napkin flowers and we had to explain why we called it the laughing man. You were always so happy and laughing, made us feel special” - Christine Annette Bligh
“We will miss that smiling face, good luck in your next stage if life!” - Donna Lyon
“This is the worst news ever!!!!!! The best place for Thai with friends and wine! I hope the new owners are just as smiley” - Caitlin Mackenzie
The families final operating day will be this Saturday the 9th September with a new business opening in the coming weeks.
Good luck and thanks for the memories – and the smiles!
