People heading to Sydney Airport will experience big delays today, and until further notice, after a major ramp up in security.

A new minimum two-hour check-in time for domestic travellers in Australia is expected to become the norm, after authorities in Sydney foiled a suspected terror plot to bring down a plane with a bomb.

Travellers have been warned to pack light and allow extra check-in time for additional security.

Jetstar and Virgin Australia have upgraded their advice from one hour, also telling passengers to limit carry-on and checked baggage to ensure efficient screening processes. International travellers are advised to arrive three hours before their fight departure time.
