60 Thousand Homes Without Power

Sydney Power Failure Closes M5 East

Just what you don't want on a Friday afternoon..

60,000 homes and businesses are without power in Sydney's Inner West and South West, also causing traffic chaos.

The M5 East is closed in both directions between General Holmes Drive at Mascot and King Georges Road at Beverly Hills.

Up to 100 sets of traffic lights are blacked out in areas including Croydon Park, Canterbury, Bexley, Bexley North, Roselands, Kingsgrove, Wolli Creek, Mascot and Burwood Heights.

Here's the latest advice from the Transport Manager Centre:

  • Motorists who need to travel can use the signposted D5 detour route instead - General Holmes Drive, Bestic Street, West Botany Street, Forest Road, Stoney Creek Road and King Georges Road.

Traffic in these areas is extremely heavy, and motorists are advised to expect significant delays and allow plenty of extra time.

Up to 100 sets of traffic lights are blacked out in areas including Croydon Park, Canterbury, Bexley, Bexley North, Roselands, Kingsgrove, Wolli Creek, Mascot and Burwood Heights.

  • Motorists who need to travel in these areas are advised to take extreme care, and follow the directions of police at key intersections.

Many bus services running in these areas are also delayed due to the heavy traffic.

As well, light rail services are not running between Lilyfield and Dulwich Hill, with a limited service between Central and Lilyfield only.

  • Replacement buses are being organised between Lilyfield and Dulwich Hill but are not on site. Passengers should delay their trip.
