A man has died after his sailing boat capsized in hazardous seas off Sydney.

A woman who swam to shore from the yacht at Boat Harbour near Kurnell alerted authorities to the incident about 5am on Monday.

Rescuers then spotted the man's body floating in the water at about 5.50am near Wanda Beach.

He was winched to shore but couldn't be resuscitated, police say.

The man had just bought the yacht and was going to sail it to Queensland, the ABC reports.

"Inquiries are continuing in relation to what actually has occurred, however, the seas were quite hazardous ... which obviously made it difficult for rescuers," Acting Inspector Mel Thompson told reporters on Monday.

The woman was taken to Sutherland Hospital where she's in a stable condition.
